Chapter 3: Oh So Good

The only light to fill the room was that of the porch light as I lay thought provoked on my couch.  The door was slightly propped open and sounds of speeding cars entered from the highway, each zooming along impatiently as the next.  It triggered something in my mind that got me thinking about the season.  It got me believing.   Life seems that much better when you wake up every morning being apart of something.  As you pull back the covers you have something that makes you step back into reality and negate those night long fantasies.

Believing in something brings children to the Christmas tree every December 25th.  Believing in something brings people to their places of worship.  It gets people excited to share their same beliefs with others, to be apart of something.

I hope by the end of the season the Menace might be that euphoria.  I know for you Red Army supporters (Official Menace Fans) summer time just feels oh so good.  It gives you a chance to join together and show your pride in the Des Moines community.  It gives you a chance to break away from the strong hold of Corporate America and enjoy something pure.  It is like those driving on the open road with no other worries but remembering the words to their favorite song.

Picture this:

It is Saturday and for the first time since you can remember you were awakened by something other than your alarm clock.  The bright summer sun shins brightly through the cracks in the blinds and your Menace t-shirt hangs lazily over the chair.  Your smile can not escape your face because your mind knows there is a game today.  You dress the children in their Menace gear, but it is a struggle because their bodies are full of excitement and energy.  Stories of autograph signings and hotdogs are the topic of conversation.  The car ride is anything but calm as arguments break out over who will catch a t-shirt.  As you enter Valley Stadium, you can not help but notice how many other people share your same passion.  You let the kids run off to the kids’ zone and take your place among instant friends.  The stadium is full of chants and anthems all in support of the red and black.  Numbness over takes your body as the game reaches closer to kick-off.  You feel such apart of the team and community that you quickly join in the “We love you Menace” chant.  You believe and it feels oh so good.  Your children believe and it feels oh so good and you know for at least ninety minutes there are no other worries but remembering the words to your favorite song.
